Workshop
Virtual Consultation Workshop on Baseline Energy Outlook for Asia and the Pacific Subregions and Select Countries
Innovative technologies and business models are needed by developing countries to facilitate and expedite energy transitions, and infrastructure investment must be future-proof in terms of rapid technological evolution and climate change. In fact, implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal-7 (SDG-7) targets are now more essential in the context of providing livelihood and sustainable development. Many countries have been expressing need for external financial, technical, and capacity building assistance to support NDC implementation, a move that could also enable some to raise their contributions. After the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, such need will be more pressing. Innovative low-carbon energy technologies can be scaled up by performing practical analysis through energy technology road maps and future-looking scenarios to identify and match subregion-specific and/or country-specific energy needs with sustainable energy technology and business model solutions which could not only provide access to energy but also affordable energy. These processes should be followed by testing the applicability of these solutions in real-world situations.
In this context, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed a team of international consultants from PricewaterhouseCoopers (India), The Celestial Earth (India) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria) to undertake a detailed study of the energy outlook until 2040 and develop low-carbon technology roadmaps to facilitate countries in achieving the NDCs and SDG-7 targets. The scope of this assignment covers five subregions – South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Central and West Asia, and the Pacific Islands; and six countries – India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Pakistan and People’s Republic of China. Under the regional technical assistance Integrated High Impact Innovation in Sustainable Energy Technology (Subproject 1) - Energy System Analysis, Technology Road Maps and Feasibility Studies for Pilot Testing1, the team is dedicatedly working towards development of regional.
