Narayani-Shanker Biomass Power Plant (NS-BPP) is a grid-connected biomass power plant with an installed capacity of 720kW. The plant is located in Lumbini, Rupandehi District of western Nepal, 5kms along the highway west of the Lumbini Development Trust Area (LDTA). The project has been developed and promoted by TMB-Energietechnik, which is based in Kathmandu, Nepal. This project proposes to increase the plant capacity of NS-BPP from 500kW to 720kW. The additional capacity will increase the electricity sales to NEA by an additional 4.5 million kWh/annum. An amendment of the PPA and an increase in the project loan amount is being pursued by the company. NS-BPP follows the 3 E's criteria of power generation - Energy, Environment, Economy. This means energy is produced in an environmentally friendly manner, with no toxic gases and pollutants are emitted in the process. Economic benefits are shared between the company and the community, with a satisfactory return on investment for NS-BPP shareholders. The NS-BPP requires 8,000MT of agro-forest residue annually to maximize its 720 kW installed capacity. Preliminary studies indicate a biomass supply potential of 50,000 MT within a 25km radius of the power plant.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who has this problem?
Nepal has an energy deficit.
Value Proposition
The technology involves gasification of briquetted agro-forest residues to obtain 'producer gas' which is fed into a gas engine/generator. The Project Consultant is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) Bangalore, India and the EPC Contractor is Arrya Hi-Tech Energy, Coimbatore, India with whom agreements have been signed. Arrya Hi-Tech under the supervision of IISc.will provide necessary on-the-job training for operations and management of the power plant.
  • Electric energy is produced from un-utilized agro-forest residue
  • Energy generation is environment friendly and carbon neutral
  • Additional income to rural community from the sale of agro-forest residue to NS-BPP
