Coconut shell-based activated carbon is considered as the hardest and highest quality carbon for various applications including water purification, mining of precious metals, petroleum products, air purification, and defense world wide. Coconut is mostly grown in Asian countries, of which India is leading by production and productivity. Coconut farming is the livelihood of majority in India especially in South India. India has exported 61212 MT of activated carbon from coconut shells, having a value of 650 Crore in 2015-16 FY. This activated carbon is produced from 183636 MT of coconut shell charcoal. The demand for the product is increasing every day due to its high quality. Our plan is to produce the charcoal using a non polluting machine. The current production practices are not environment friendly and heavily polluting. Using a mobile carbonisor, we are carbonizing the coconut shell in a closed chamber where the gases will be converted into low density oil which is used as heating medium in various industries. Our mobile machine can be directly brought to farmers that allows us to buy shells from them at the best price, avoiding middlemen. Municipal bodies benefit from the collection of coconut shells that is considered as domestic waste. The state health department and the public benefits because mosquito reproduction is controlled that reduces the likelihood of diseases like dengue to occur.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who has this problem?
As the demand of activated carbon is significantly increasing, major multi national companies that work in the sector have started investing in India to ensure the sustainability of of their business. The activated carbon companies are running at 50% capacity on an average due to the shortage of good quality coconut shell charcoal. This shortage is partly due to the inefficient practices in producing charcoal which is by burning coconut shells collected all over South India. The traditional charcoal-making process starts with the collection of the coconut shells from farmers through middle men in different stages. The shells are gathered in places where the population is comparatively less dense. They are then burnt in heaps or in big pits. In heaps, the smoke will come out and pollutes the air, while the in pit method mixes smoke and the oil content in the shell with ground water. These malpractices led to a stoppage notice to all charcoal making units in a particular state. Other states have these facilities but operating without proper approval from authorities. Even though charcoal and activated carbon is in high demand, there are no good commercially viable mechanisms existing in the market that can produce charcoal in an environment-friendly method. We, Organature Products have developed a carbonisor that will address the following issues in the industry: 1. Pollution - Smoke and gas will be converted into low density oil 2. High Quality charcoal - Due to traditional methods, companies who buy charcoal is facing issues due to contamination and poor quality 3. Better pricing to farmers and copra converters who face cheaper pricing due to middle men 4. Heat energy supply for coconut copra converters to improve their productivity . 5. Waste management - value addition to wastes by collecting the shells from municipal waste collection 6. Controlling the Mosquito - Reproduction of mosquito in coconut shell thrown away from houses and other sources are considered as the major source of mosquito breeding by the state government health department. The careless accumulation of coconut shells is a non-bailable offense in Kerala State in India.
Value Proposition
As a company which believes in the well being of its society, we believe that this is our responsibility to find out a mechanism which can make the industry grow without endangering the environment and that enhances the earning capacity of farmers. This led us to the invention of the mobile carbonisor. We have designed a static carbonisor as a result of our experience in the industry for the past 6 years - collecting the coconut shells from various places and gathering them in one place that resulted to additional expenses. Since coconut shell is a light weight material and the shape of the material is not even, transportation of coconut shells from once place to another incurred about 10-25% of material costs depending on the market condition. Driven by the need to reduce logistical cost and the desire to provide the farmers with the best price, we have decided to develop a mobile carbonisor. This mobile carbonisor helps us to reach the sources directly, lower logistics cost, and provides high quality products by mechanization. There are three main sources for us to get the raw material . 1. Big coconut industries 2. Small copra manufacturers 3. Domestic use
